The unions were backing the Madrid 2020 Bid because of the boost it would provide for Spain around the world: “The award of the Olympic Games would help us show our country in its proper light at a time when our international image is being undermined".
“Your contribution to Madrid 2020 is a show of confidence in our country”

Blanco commented that some 40 companies are supporting the bid and the dreams of millions of people. He added that together they form one of the bid’s most solid bases.

No other Spanish athlete may be as proud of his personal Olympic medal count as Asturias-born canoeist Herminio Menéndez. After taking part at the 1972, 1976, 1980 and 1984 Olympic Games, and winning three medals – two silver and one bronze, he could boast about having 35% of the whole Spanish medal count around his neck at that time.
